Overview

This fun, challenging and very popular two-day course provides the skills and theory required for driving powerboats such as RIBs (rigid hull boats), open day-boats and any kind of sports boat up to 10m. The course comprises a theory component and lots of fun on the water practicing low-speed and close-quarters handling, man overboard recovery and an introduction to basic high-speed manoeuvres.

At Mourne Powerboat School we are passionate about training and we’d love to teach you whether you’re a beginner – embarking on your new adventure – or an experienced boater looking to gain an RYA ICC qualification you can be assured we have the correct course to meet your needs.

An added bonus to this is that many insurance companies now ask for a level of training to insure pleasure boats or if you are heading away on holidays and wish to do a bit of power boating in Europe or further afield, you will need minimum level 2 with ICC. If you are looking to use the certificate for work, you can move towards getting your Level 2 commercially endorsed RYA PPR course.

Our practical, exciting course, takes place with all the facilities of a top class marina and on coastal seas, making it an active and fun learning experience.

We are a recognised RYA training centre and our boat is coded to the highest spec with the MCA Cat 4. All of our instructors are highly qualified with a wealth of local knowledge to navigate and teach practical courses.

We have a dedicated classroom with charts, training props, video content, training manuals & books. We also have changing rooms, shower facilities, tea & coffee facilities and on site parking

RYA Powerboat Course

Course

  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 (£275 per person)
  • Direct assessment 1 to 1 (£175 per person)

A 2 day course to achieve RYA Powerboat Level 2 Certification allowing you to drive power boats up to 10 metre.

The course comprises of a theory component and lots of fun on the water practicing low-speed and close-quarters handling, man overboard recovery and an introduction to basic high-speed manoeuvres.

Designed to be a mainly practical for 2 days with a few theory sessions built in.
RYA Powerboat Level 2 is conducted in our Ballistic 7.2m Ocean RIB with a Yamaha 150 HP outboard engine, MCA coded Cat 4, at our base in Ardglass Marina.
This is an entry level course where no previous experience is necessary and suitable for anyone wishing to gain powerboat certification. Minimum age is 12 years old.

Each course is limited to three students to ensure you gain the most out of your course.
If you are a competent powerboat handler, why not consider the RYA Powerboat Level 2 direct access option, this is an assessment of your skills over a 3 hour period rather than a two day course, contact directly to make appointment.

The completion of the course allows you to apply to the RYA for an ICC [International Certificate of Competence] for boat up to 10 metres. Essential if you want to rent a boat on holiday in many jurisdictions.

Pre-Requisites

  • No previous experience is necessary.
  • Start powerboating handbook available on booking.
  • 2 passport photos.

This is a two day course run from 09:00 to 17:00 on both days

Additional Information

Courses will run throughout the year so it is very important to have the correct clothing for the relevant time of the year.

With our climate I would ask you to be prepared, wet gear is always advisable, warm jackets and trousers, hats and gloves, sensible flat & preferably non slip shoes.

Summer months ensure you have sunscreen, sun glasses and a cap.

Automatic Life jackets are provided for use during the course.

Please do not forget refreshments and fluids.
You will also need 2 signed passport size photos with you

Certification

The Powerboat Level 2 Certificate is awarded on successful completion of the course

Post Course

After the course you should be a self-sufficient power-boater on open planning craft up to 10m in the right conditions, aware of your own limitations and those of the craft. At the end of a successful course you may also be eligible for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC).

Note: if you are taking this course and intend to apply for an ICC, a coastal Powerboat Level 2 course will allow you to apply for a coastal ICC for Power up to 10m. The inland Powerboat Level 2 course will allow you to apply for an inland ICC for Power up to 10m,
